Being Thirsty

Monday, April 10, 2006

My husband has been preaching a series of sermons based on the seven sayings of Christ from the cross. This one, in particular, has caused me to stop and think: "I am thirsty."

In John 4 Jesus declared Himself to be the source of Living Water, promising that all who receive Him will never thirst again. Yet here on the cross, Jesus exclaims, "I am thirsty!" How can the source of Living Water be thirsty? It must be connected, somehow, to another statement, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46)

It is highly probable Jesus was experiencing physical thirst on the cross. After all, he was in a human body which would have been dehydrating at this point. But I truly believe Christ's craving went much deeper than H2O, that it was a spirtual thirsting for the Father.

Isaiah 59:2 clearly states that our sin separates us from God. Since Jesus had never known sin, He'd never experienced that division...until the cross. In excruciating agony, nailed to wooden beams, the Blameless One took upon Himself all sin for all time; sin that broke His fellowship with God.

Why would He do this?

"He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness." ~ 1 Peter 2:44

"But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again - ever!" ~ John 4:14

Think about it: The Living Water was poured out so we could be filled up. Are we drinking deeply today?
